Rolex Protege Nicholas Hlobo Featured in Solo Presentation at Frieze New York
27 April 2012
For Frieze New York, Stevenson will dedicate its booth to a solo presentation by Nicholas Hlobo. This will mark the first art fair at which Hlobo’s work is shown after the 2011 Venice Biennale, where he exhibited in the Arsenale, at Palazzo Grassi and as part of the Future Generation Art Prize exhibition.
Hlobo was born in Cape Town in 1975, and lives in Johannesburg. In 2008 he had solo exhibitions in the Level 2 Gallery at Tate Modern, and at the Boston ICA as part of the Momentum series. In 2010 Hlobo participated in the Liverpool Biennale, and was awarded a Rolex mentorship with Anish Kapoor. Currently, new paintings by the artist are included in the Paris Triennale at Centre Pompidou (opening April 20), under the artistic direction of Okwui Enwezor. His next project is a commissioned sculpture for Cockatoo Island as part of the 2012 Sydney Biennale, opening at the end of June.
